Requalification of the 450 housing units of the residence "La Vallonnière" in Lyon (09)
Consultation November 2005 - Project not retained
Client : SACVL

The residence "La Vallonière", is built on the north-west face of the Saint Just hill and is representative of the 1950’s to 1960’s "barres", long, polyhedral housing units that were built on the slopes surrounding the city of Lyon.

Our objective here is to :
- Redefine a parkland architecture  with reduced height that fits into the surroundings amongst the foliage of the trees,(total demolition of the largest building and reconstruction of 5-storey buildings).
- Break the uniformity and the wide-screen scale to produce a much richer use of volume, with diverse facades that are protected from the elements while opening the housing units to the natural surroundings.
- To define an identifying and oriented silhouette with particular care given to the crown that remains evident when viewed from a distance..
- Design an architecture with simple volumes but with a carefully studied casing to improve the interior/exterior relationship of each housing unit.

The long term objective is to no longer be able to distinguish the existing renovated buildings from the new buildings.
